The experience
Two hours gets you a loop around Tauranga's waterfront and Mount Maunganui without needing a rental car. The bus picks you up right outside the cruise terminal (look for the red flags on the road), and heads straight into a scenic drive. You'll pass the Harbour Bridge with views of the marina and cruise ships navigating the channel, roll past the Elms Mission House and the heritage Post Office building in the CBD, and cruise by the lush kiwi and avocado orchards that dot the Bay of Plenty landscape.
The only scheduled stop is at Minden Lookout, a 5- to 10-minute photo break 286 metres above sea level where you get panoramic views across Tauranga, Mount Maunganui, and on clear days, the Coromandel coastline and White Island in the distance. The drive also passes Pilot Bay's calm boardwalk, Mount Maunganui Main Beach with its white sand and lifeguards, and Harbour Drive's waterfront real estate: all visible from the bus. The tour loops back to the port, though you can choose to stay in the city centre instead and explore the waterfront and art gallery at your own pace before heading back to the ship.
After the tour ends, you have free time to wander Mount Mainstreet's shops, cafes and designer brands, or walk to the beaches and boardwalks nearby. The bus is air-conditioned with complimentary Wi-Fi, and your driver provides informative commentary throughout. Meeting point is just outside the cruise terminal gates: turn right and walk about 20 metres to the red flags where a team member will direct you to your bus.
