The experience

Five and a half hours with a Māori tribal guide takes you through the layered history of Tauranga, starting with a 30-minute drive past Mount Maunganui: the ancestral mountain whose stories your guide will share as you travel. The route connects you to sites that mark the region's turning points: the arrival of Kupe in 925AD, the first known Polynesian explorer to reach Aotearoa, and the navigational methods (Te Kāpehu, a Polynesian compass) that guided your ancestors across the ocean.

The tour moves through the 1828 conflict site where inter-tribal warfare, settler arrival, missionaries and British colonial forces collided, then pauses at the Mission House and New Zealand's oldest free-standing library. A 10-minute drive takes you to the 1864 battle ground, where you'll walk the site of one of the most significant conflicts between colonial troops and local Māori tribes, learning about the carvings, the fighting and its ripple into later world conflicts. Throughout, your guide contextualizes what each place meant to Tauranga and the wider district.

The final stop is a working marae, where you're immersed in local traditions, connections and stories. The place where the learning becomes lived understanding. You travel in an air-conditioned vehicle with a small group (minimum four guests), and the tour includes locally produced natural Mānuka sparkling water. Pickup is included in the booking.
