The drive from Te Anau to Milford Sound takes nine hours round-trip, but the route itself is the attraction. You stop first at Te Anau Downs for a view across Lake Te Anau and the Middle Fjord, then walk the Mirror Lakes boardwalk: a two-minute loop where the Earl Mountains reflect perfectly in still water. The Eglinton Valley comes next, a contrast of native bush-covered mountains against open tan fields, followed by Lake Gunn, where the Eglinton River flows in and out and the only sound is birdsong. A toilet stop at Knobs Flat breaks the drive before you reach the optional 25-minute walk to Marian Falls, where the Hollyford River roars and cascading water cuts through chasms.
Monkey Creek is where you might see Kea, the mountain parrot found only on the South Island. The Chasm, a 20-minute stop on the final approach, shows the geological work of ancient glaciers before you arrive at Milford Sound itself: a UNESCO World Heritage site.
