The experience
The day starts at Kiwi Country in Te Anau, where you meet your driver guide before heading into Fiordland National Park. The coach follows the scenic drive to Milford Sound, and the stops are where the route earns its reputation: Mirror Lakes, Elginton Valley, Knobs Flat and Monkey Creek are the named points where you get out for short walks and photos. Your guide shares stories and local knowledge as the landscape shifts from rainforest to glacier-carved valleys to alpine lookouts. This is not a race to the sound. The journey itself is the draw.
Once you reach Milford Sound, you board one of the operator's spacious catamarans for the cruise of the fiord. The boat travels the length of Milford Sound toward the Tasman Sea, and the crew points out waterfalls cascading from the rainforest high above, New Zealand fur seals on the rocks, and occasionally dolphins. You can sit in the comfortable seating, grab a local beer or wine from the bar, or join the crew on the bow. The famous finale happens at Stirling Falls, where the boat noses close enough for you to feel the spray from the glacial melt: the crew calls it a dance in the spray. Lunch is included before the return journey to Te Anau.
The coach returns to Te Anau after the cruise without stops, giving you time to rest or review the photos from the day. Four departure times are offered from Te Anau, so you can choose the schedule that fits your itinerary. Children aged 7 and younger must sit in the rear half of the coach for safety. The operator encourages parents to bring car or booster seats, though drivers cannot install them.
