The experience

The day starts in Te Anau and runs about eight hours total. You travel in a modern glass-roof coach with WiFi and USB charging, stopping at scenic points along the way: the Eglinton Valley, Lake Gunn and Homer Tunnel are timed into the route depending on the day's schedule. The coach takes you all the way to Milford Sound, so you avoid driving yourself through the mountain passes.

On the water, your skipper narrates the cruise as you pass Mitre Peak (1692 metres), Bowen Falls (163 metres) and Stirling Falls (151 metres), and you watch for native wildlife. The cruise vessel has comfortable viewing areas, and free tea and coffee are served onboard. A multilingual app is available for additional commentary if you want it. After returning to the visitor terminal, you rejoin the coach for the drive back to Te Anau.

The farm visit happens on the outskirts of Te Anau and lasts up to an hour. You meet real Kiwi farmers who show you working dogs, sheep shearing and share stories over afternoon tea. From October onward, the order switches. The cruise happens first, then the farm visit in the afternoon with afternoon tea provided instead of morning tea.
