The experience

The day starts with a mid-morning break in Te Anau, where you grab coffee and a snack before the coach heads onto the Milford Road toward Milford Sound. The drive itself is the first attraction. You stop at several scenic points along the way, each one framing a different angle of the landscape. By the time you reach Milford Sound, you've already seen the approach from the ground.

The two-hour cruise on the fiord takes you past Mitre Peak and deeper into Piopiotahi (Milford Sound's Māori name). From the water, the scale of the cliffs and waterfalls becomes clear in a way the road never quite captures. The fixed-wing flight on the return journey shows you what you've just crossed: Fiordland National Park spreads below, and Lake Wakatipu comes into view as you approach Queenstown Airport. Weather permitting, the aerial perspective completes the picture.

The whole loop takes about nine hours from pickup to drop-off. Children from age 4 are welcome. Infants under 11kg can sit on an adult's lap, though specialized infant seats are available at extra cost. You can bring your own lunch or arrange a picnic lunch through the operator for an additional charge.
