The Experience

Hands grip the e-bike at Cromwell, then 42 kilometers unfold along a lake that wasn't there thirty years ago. The Lake Dunstan Trail starts in the Historic Precinct of Old Cromwell, where gold-rush buildings from the 1860s were moved to higher ground when the Clyde Dam flooded the valley in 1990. You'll ride the same shores the old town used to face, except now the water is there and the trail clings to the edge of it. The shuttle picks you up at Clyde Depot in the morning, drives you to Cromwell, and you ride back — 42 kilometers that take most people between four and six hours, depending on stops.

The e-bike does the climbing for you, which matters because Central Otago's terrain doesn't flatten out. You get a gel seat, a helmet, a pannier bag for your stuff, and a repair kit in case the chain slips or you pick up a puncture. The app on your phone shows the route and the cellar doors along the way — Cromwell Basin and Bannockburn both have wineries close enough to pull off the trail, sit down, and taste something. The final stretch into Clyde runs through the Cromwell Gorge, where the trail is built out around sheer rock faces. You won't see sections like that on other New Zealand cycle trails.

The whole thing is self-guided, which means no one's waiting at a checkpoint or hurrying you through a photo stop. You move at your own pace, take the wine break if you want it, and the app keeps you on course. The e-bike fleet is maintained on-site, so the bike you get is current and reliable. A $5 trail donation per rider goes to upkeep. Bring water, sunscreen, and legs that can handle moderate effort — the e-assist helps, but you're still pedaling.

What’s included

E-bike hire with gel seat and helmet, shuttle transfer from Clyde Depot to Old Cromwell in the morning, pannier bag to carry your gear, puncture and chain repair kit, access to the exclusive Central Cycle Trail app for iOS and Android, and a $5 trail donation per rider.

Is this one for you?Right for riders with moderate fitness who want to cover serious distance without arranging their own transport or navigation — the shuttle and app take those off your hands, and the e-assist means the climbing doesn't stop you.

Most riders complete the 42 kilometers in four to six hours, depending on how many stops you make for photos, wine, or rest.

Do I need to be an experienced cyclist?

You need moderate fitness and comfort on a bike. The e-assist helps with climbing, but you're still pedaling the whole distance.

What's included in the e-bike rental?

The e-bike, helmet, gel seat, pannier bag, repair kit, shuttle from Clyde to Cromwell, and access to the CCT app for navigation.

Can I stop at wineries along the way?

Yes. Cellar doors in Cromwell Basin and Bannockburn are close to the trail. You choose whether and where to stop.

Is the trail suitable for beginners?

Not for complete beginners. You need to be comfortable riding a bike for several hours and handling moderate terrain.
