The experience

The Lake Dunstan Trail runs from Clyde to Cromwell along the water and the Kawarau River, passing vineyards and historic sites as it winds through Bannockburn. A shuttle departs Cromwell at 9:15am to take you back to Clyde, where the ride begins. Premium eBikes handle the terrain with no range anxiety, and you get a comprehensive bike fitting and tour briefing before you start, plus a trail map, helmet, mini-repair kit, and bags for your belongings.

The route has Grade 3 sections where the trail is steep and narrow, so you need to be confident on a bike and in good cardiovascular shape. The inside-of-trail positioning keeps you away from potential hazards as the landscape opens up in front of you. A live guide in English leads the ride and shares local knowledge about the region. In the afternoon, you can choose to stop at Carrick Cellar Door & Garden for lunch and wine tastings at your own cost, or continue straight through.

The full day takes 6 hours from the shuttle departure to the end of the ride. Children from age 6 can join, though the fitness and bike-handling demands mean younger riders need to be capable on two wheels. Public transportation options are available nearby if you need an alternative to the shuttle.
