The experience
The ride starts with a shuttle from Queenstown to Arrow Junction, where you pick up your bike and head out. The first 6 km follows a dedicated bike trail before you reach the Gibbston Valley Trail proper. Along the way you cross the Kawarau Suspension Bridge, where you can watch bungy jumpers and zip-liners in action. The bridge is home to the world's first commercial bungy operation. From there, the valley opens up with seven wineries, a brewery and a tavern spread across the region, all reachable by bike.
This is a self-guided ride, so you set the itinerary. Spend an hour at one winery, twenty minutes at the next, or skip ahead to the ones that appeal to you. The terrain has some hills and undulating sections, but it's designed for casual riders and couples rather than athletes. You get a custom map marking the trail and each winery location, and support is a phone call away if you hit a mechanical issue or lose your way. Electric bikes are recommended for the hills. Mountain bikes are also available.
When you're done tasting, a shuttle picks you up from your final winery and takes you back to Queenstown. The whole outing runs about 6.5 hours from start to finish, though that's flexible depending on how long you linger in the valley.
What’s included

Is this one for you?Choose the electric bike if you want to take your time at wineries without tiring on the hills. The mountain bike works if you're comfortable with a traditional pedal and want a lighter ride. Either way, the self-guided format means you're not locked to a group's schedule or a guide's pace. You stop where you want and move on when you're ready.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (5 to 14 years); Infant (under 5).
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What's the Kawarau Suspension Bridge and why do I ride across it?
The Kawarau Suspension Bridge is a historic crossing over the Kawarau River and the site of the world's first commercial bungy jumping operation. You ride across it as part of the Gibbston Valley Trail, and it's a good spot to watch jumpers and zip-liners in action while you're cycling through.
Can I choose which wineries to visit, or is the route fixed?
The route is self-guided, so you choose which of the seven wineries, the brewery and tavern you want to stop at and how long you spend at each one. The custom map shows you where they all are, and you ride between them at your own pace.
Are wine tastings and food included in the ride?
Wine tastings and food are not included. You pay separately at each winery or venue you visit. The ride covers transport, your bike, helmet and a map. Everything else is up to you.
What's the difference between the mountain bike and electric bike options?
Both options cover the same route and include the same shuttle and support. Electric bikes are recommended because the terrain has hills and undulating sections. They make the ride more enjoyable if you want to spend more time tasting and less time climbing. Mountain bikes are available if you prefer a traditional pedal.
How fit do I need to be for this ride?
The ride is suitable for casual riders and couples with at least a moderate level of physical fitness. It's relaxed rather than strenuous, though the terrain does have some hills. If you have poor cardiovascular health, it's not recommended.
