Summary

Cycle the Clutha River Trail & Otago Central Rail Trail

You’ll cycle easy riverside trails between Clyde and Alexandra on a comfy e-bike, stopping for local coffee or vineyard lunch as you like. It’s relaxed, scenic riding with real local flavor—perfect if you want freedom but also support along the way.

experience

What’s the experience like?

The morning air in Clyde always feels a bit crisp, even in summer. We met at the old stone depot in the Historic Clyde Precinct—easy to spot with its faded signage and a couple of locals already chatting over takeaway coffees from Oliver’s next door. Our guide, Mike, handed out e-bikes (mine had a gel seat cover that honestly saved me later) and made sure helmets actually fit before running through the route on their CCT app. It’s simple enough to follow, but I liked having those little pop-up tips about where to grab a snack or which bridge had the best river views.

The Clutha River Trail heads out of town with barely any traffic—just the sound of water and the odd bellbird if you’re listening for it. We cruised past willows dipping into the blue-green river, then stopped at Alexandra for a quick coffee at The Tin Goose. You can take your time here; nobody rushes you. The ride back loops onto the Otago Central Rail Trail—wider gravel, old railway markers still standing, and sheep sometimes wandering close to the fence line. There’s plenty of space for families or anyone who hasn’t been on a bike in years (trust me, I’m not exactly Tour de France material). If you want to linger over lunch at a vineyard or just watch trout flicker in the shallows, it’s all up to you.
