Step-by-step itinerary

Full-day sea kayak adventure

  • Briefing and trip setup
  • Paddle out to Tiritiri Matangi Island
  • Explore island and birdlife
  • Return paddle from island

The experience

Double sea kayaks carry you and a partner across the Hauraki Gulf to Tiritiri Matangi, a pest-free island sanctuary managed for native bird conservation. The paddle out takes you across open water where you'll spot seabirds in their natural habitat. Your guide, a qualified kayak instructor, leads the trip and handles all tuition, so you learn the strokes and safety as you go. The island itself is the point: once you land on the beach, the guide steps back and you're free to walk the tracks, climb to the lighthouse, and move at your own pace through the birdlife and coastal views.

The return paddle follows the same route back to the launch point. The full day runs six to seven hours from briefing to finish. You'll need to pack your own lunch and snacks in sealed containers. The island is pest-free by design, so sealed food keeps it that way. Transport to and from the launch location is your own arrangement. Public transport options exist nearby.

What’s included

  • Stable double sea kayaks.
  • all tuition from a qualified kayak guide.
  • all kayaking and safety equipment.

What native birds will I see on Tiritiri Matangi?

Tiritiri Matangi is a wildlife sanctuary where native New Zealand birds live in their natural habitat. The island is managed as a pest-free reserve, which allows rare species to thrive there. Your guide will point out birdlife during the paddle and while you're on the island, though which species you encounter depends on the season and time of day.

Do I need kayaking experience to paddle to the island?

No previous kayaking experience is necessary. Your guide is a qualified kayak instructor and provides all tuition during the trip, teaching you the strokes and safety as you paddle. You do need a moderate level of physical fitness to handle six to seven hours on the water and the paddle distance to the island.

How much time do I have to explore Tiritiri Matangi once we land?

After you land on the beach, you have free time to explore the island on your own. You can walk the island's tracks, visit the lighthouse, and move at your own pace through the sanctuary. The exact amount of time depends on the day's schedule, but exploration is built into the full-day itinerary.

What's included in the kayaking trip?

The operator provides stable double sea kayaks, all tuition from your guide, and all kayaking and safety equipment. You'll need to pack your own lunch and snacks in sealed containers, and you'll arrange your own transport to the launch location.

Is the island accessible if I have mobility concerns?

Tiritiri Matangi Island is not wheelchair accessible. The trip also isn't recommended for travelers with spinal injuries or poor cardiovascular health. If you have questions about your specific situation, contact the operator before booking.
