Kayaking Motukorea / Browns Island, Auckland
Paddle to an ancient volcano, trek its summit, learn three centuries of Māori and colonial history.
Sea kayaking to Motukorea (Browns Island) in Auckland's Hauraki Gulf combines paddling across sheltered waters with a guided trek to the summit of one of the region's best-preserved volcanic cones. The island holds three ancient pā sites (Māori fortified villages), and the largest occupies the slopes of the main scoria cone. No previous kayaking experience is necessary, and small groups mean you paddle with an experienced guide who knows the island's history and the gulf's conditions. Light refreshments are provided on the island before the return paddle.
The Experience
Four hours on the water and the island starts with the paddle itself. You leave from sheltered waters in the Hauraki Gulf, paddling in a top-quality sea kayak with an experienced guide who has over 20 years of kayaking knowledge. Small groups keep the pace relaxed and the attention personal — this is not a race across open ocean, but a crossing of the gulf's protected waters to an island that is accessible only by private boat or kayak. The paddle gives you time to read the water and settle into the rhythm before you arrive.
On the island, you trek to the summit and the views open across Auckland's skyline and the gulf. The walk takes you past three ancient pā sites, with the largest spread across the slopes of the main scoria cone itself. Your guide explains the island's history — how Māori cultivated it heavily before European arrival, and how it became the first home of Sir Logan Campbell (the city's mayor) and William Brown (Auckland's first member of parliament). The summit walk is the heart of the day, and the history is woven into every step.
Light refreshments and fresh morning tea are provided on the island before you paddle back. Pickup from Auckland city center and drop-off are included on request, so the logistics of getting to the water are already arranged. The whole day runs four hours, which means you can fit it into a morning or an afternoon without losing the rest of your time in the city.

Do I need kayaking experience to paddle to Motukorea?
No previous kayaking experience is necessary. The guides have over 20 years of knowledge and work with small groups, so they adjust the pace to your comfort level and the conditions on the day.
What is Motukorea and why is it worth the paddle?
Motukorea (Browns Island) is one of the best-preserved volcanoes in the Auckland Volcanic Field. It holds three ancient Māori pā sites, and the largest occupies the slopes of the main scoria cone. Private boats and kayaks are the only way to reach it, which is why it remains untouched and why the trek to the summit feels like stepping into history.
How long is the walk on the island?
The trek to the summit is part of the four-hour activity, which includes paddling to the island, the walk itself, refreshments on the island, and paddling back. Your guide sets the pace and shares the island's history as you go.
Is pickup from my Auckland hotel included?
Free pickup and drop-off from Auckland city center are available on request, so you can arrange transport to the water without booking separately.
What should I bring or wear?
Top-quality sea kayak equipment is provided. Wear layers you don't mind getting wet, bring sunscreen, and check your gear for pests before boarding — the Hauraki Gulf islands are protected, and cleaning your footwear and gear helps keep them pest-free.
