itinerary

Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Sea kayak and hike Rangitoto Island

  • Pick up from central Auckland
  • Safety briefing and paddling instruction
  • Kayak across Waitemata harbour
  • Arrive at Rangitoto wharf
  • One-hour walk to summit
  • Enjoy 360-degree views
  • Return to water’s edge
  • Kiwi-style BBQ dinner
  • Drop off at central Auckland

The first thing I remember is the way the water caught the late sun—Waitemata really does mean “sparkling waters,” but you don’t get it until your paddle actually breaks the surface. Our guide, Jamie, handed me my gear at the little dock near Auckland Museum (they pick you up there if you want), and I was honestly a bit nervous. I’d never kayaked this far before. But Jamie just grinned and said, “You’ll be fine, just keep your arms loose.” So I did. The city faded behind us, all glass and noise, replaced by seabirds and this weird hush that made me realize how close Auckland is to wildness.

I didn’t expect to see penguins—Little Blues darting past under our boats—and when someone pointed out a Cook’s Petrel overhead, Jamie told us how rare they are around here. It felt like we were sneaking into someone else’s world for a few hours. When we landed at Rangitoto’s wharf, the ground felt almost springy from all that old volcanic scoria underfoot. The walk up is about an hour but no one seemed in a rush; people stopped to poke at pohutukawa roots or try (and fail) to pronounce Māori names on the signs. Jamie had stories about eruptions and conservation projects—he even showed us how to check our shoes for seeds so we wouldn’t bring pests onto the island.

Near the summit, I caught myself just staring out over Auckland—the light was sharp and blue and everything looked impossibly far away. Someone pulled out a thermos of tea (included, surprisingly good), which tasted like actual relief after all that climbing. On the way down my legs were wobbly but it didn’t matter because there was this smoky smell drifting from the beach—Kiwi BBQ waiting for us by the water’s edge. Eating outside with everyone talking over each other about what they’d seen felt almost as good as reaching the top itself. I still think about that view sometimes when things get noisy back home.
