The experience

The tour starts from Auckland CBD and takes you across Waitemata Harbour by kayak toward Browns Island. The paddle itself is the route: four hours round trip through the Hauraki Gulf, where you watch for marine life, seabirds, and the occasional dolphin or whale. The island sits as a volcanic cone from an eruption 25,000 years ago, part of Auckland's active volcanic field. What you're paddling toward is both a geological landmark and a working wildlife sanctuary, now home to tūī, pūkeko, silvereye, skinks and geckos after decades of restoration.

Once you reach Browns Island, the kayak becomes your base for exploring. The island holds layers of history: Māori farmed and fished here for centuries, leaving behind pā sites; early European settlers swam horses across the harbor to reach it; and in 1909, the Barnard brothers launched New Zealand's first aeroplane trials from the island's peak. You move through these remnants on foot, seeing the volcanic landscape and the native species that have returned. The island is uninhabited and a recreational reserve, so the day is about moving through the place itself rather than visiting facilities.

Life jacket, kayak and paddle are provided. The tour includes coffee and tea. The guide leads in English and stays with the group throughout. Children from age 10 can join. The paddle back to Auckland follows the same route through the gulf, giving you a second pass through the water where conditions and wildlife sightings can shift between morning and afternoon.
