The Experience

“Don’t trip over the turnip!” That’s what our guide, Tania, called out as we shuffled down the path between those round green doors. I laughed — I mean, who expects to nearly step on a fake vegetable in the middle of New Zealand? The drive from Auckland was longer than I thought (about two and a half hours), but honestly, watching the fog lift off those Waikato hills through the van window made it feel shorter. There was this earthy smell when we got out — wet grass and sheep somewhere nearby. It felt like we’d landed in someone’s storybook dream, but also just… New Zealand, you know?

Tania knew every weird fact about Hobbiton. She pointed at a tiny mailbox and told us how they aged it with yogurt to make it look “lived in.” I still think about that — yogurt as paint! We wandered past Bilbo’s place (Bag End is smaller than you’d think), ducked under laundry lines with miniature shirts flapping in the breeze. The sun kept peeking out behind clouds; everything looked extra green for some reason. At one point, a tui bird started up in a tree above us and everyone just went quiet for a second — even the guy who wouldn’t stop quoting Gandalf.

The best bit? Sitting inside the Green Dragon Inn with a ginger beer in my hand, staring at old wooden beams while people chatted around me like it was any pub back home. Except there were hobbit-sized mugs everywhere and someone tried to teach me how to say “cheers” in Māori (I definitely butchered it). Afterward, we poked around the gift shop — I almost bought a leaf brooch but couldn’t justify it — then grabbed lunch at Shire’s Rest Café (not included, but their pies are solid). The whole thing felt both surreal and oddly normal at once.

I guess I didn’t expect to feel so comfortable wandering around a movie set. Maybe that’s why people love this place — it feels like you belong there for an afternoon. Even now, back in Auckland traffic, I keep thinking about that patch of sunlight on Bagshot Row and how quiet everything got for just a minute.
