The Experience
We kicked off our Auckland adventure right from the lobby of our hotel—no need to figure out bus routes or taxi fares. Our guide, Ana, greeted us with a grin and a couple of tips about the best coffee spots nearby (she swears by Remedy Coffee on Wellesley Street). The air had that salty tang you only get in port cities, and even though it was early, Queen Street was already buzzing with locals grabbing flat whites and students heading to class.
Ana didn’t stick to a script. She asked what we wanted to see—art, food, history? We ended up weaving through Britomart’s old brick warehouses (now full of indie shops), then ducked into an alley where someone was selling hot cheese scones out of a tiny window. At one point, we stopped just to listen—the faint sound of Māori street musicians mixing with the distant ferry horns from the harbor.
By the end, I felt like I could actually find my way around without Google Maps. Ana left us with handwritten notes on her favorite cheap eats and even circled a spot for sunset views over Waitematā Harbour.
