The Experience

“Don’t touch the monster’s teeth,” our guide said, but honestly, I couldn’t resist. The thing looked so real—like it might blink if you stared too long. We’d just stepped into Wētā Workshop Unleashed at SkyCity Auckland, and it was already nothing like I expected. There was this faint smell of glue and paint in the air, kind of like an art classroom but with more dinosaurs and robots. Our group was mostly Kiwis (plus me), and everyone kept pointing out details I would’ve missed—like the tiny scars on a robot’s arm or the way the lighting changed in each room.

I tried to pronounce one of the creature names—Li laughed when I butchered it, but she showed me how to say it properly (I still got it wrong). She was one of the workshop crew, actually working there between tours, which made everything feel less staged. We wandered through these wild sets from three different movie genres—fantasy, sci-fi, horror—and each one had its own weird energy. The horror room had this damp chill and a soundtrack that made my skin crawl a bit. In sci-fi, there was a giant robot that towered over us; you could run your hand along its metal leg and feel every scratch. I didn’t expect to get so into the practical effects part—I even tried sculpting something with silicone (mine looked like a melted potato).

The best bit? You can actually play with some of the props—pull levers, peek behind fake walls, mess around with sound effects. It felt less like a museum and more like being dropped into someone’s half-finished dream. At one point I caught myself just standing there watching one of the artists paint scales onto a dragon tail—her hands were steady but her shoes were splattered with every color you could imagine. I left thinking about all those tiny details nobody ever sees on screen but someone here spent hours getting just right. Makes you look at movies differently after that.
