The experience

The day starts with pickup and a drive into West Auckland's wine region, where two vineyards anchor the morning and afternoon. The Hunting Lodge opens first: a winery built on the heritage of the Spence brothers, who made the first New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, and now known for award-winning Sparkling Muscat, Rosé, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, Albariño, Montepulciano, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Lagrein and Cabernet Sauvignon. You taste through their range in a setting that balances that history with a contemporary approach to both wine and design.

Lunch happens at Soljans, a family-owned winery that has stood for over 80 years and is now in its fifth generation of the same family making wine. The 3-course meal arrives with your choice of a glass of wine, beer or juice included. The winery's own story (one of the oldest still operating in New Zealand) frames the afternoon, and the vineyard itself is the backdrop to the meal.

A knowledgeable guide handles the route, the timing and the commentary throughout, so the group moves without anyone managing logistics. The Mercedes accommodates 12, 15 or 17 people depending on group size, which means the ride itself is spacious and the group stays small enough for real conversation and attention at each stop.
