The Experience

The first thing I remember is the wind at Mt Wellington — not wild, but enough to make my hair stick to my face while our guide, Tama, traced lines in the dirt with his boot. He pointed out where early Maori built their homes right on these slopes, which honestly surprised me. I could smell wet grass and something earthy, like old lava after rain. It’s strange realizing you’re standing on what used to be fire.

We hopped between volcanoes all morning — Mangere Mountain next, where you can actually walk inside the crater if you want (I did, shoes got muddy). Tama told us about kumara gardens and how the land was shaped by both people and eruptions. The clouds kept shifting so sometimes the whole city would just appear in the distance, then vanish again behind mist. Someone in our group tried to say “Mangere” properly; Tama grinned but didn’t correct him. I liked that.

One Tree Hill was busier — families with kids chasing sheep around Cornwall Park. There’s this odd quiet up there though, even with people talking. Our guide gave us a quick rundown of British-Maori history (not sugarcoated), and I caught myself staring at the skyline instead of listening for a bit. By the time we reached Mt Eden, my legs were tired but I still climbed up for those last views over Auckland’s volcanic field — it’s more patchwork than postcard perfect, but maybe that’s why it sticks with me.
