Summary

Electric cycling Auckland’s hills, waterfronts & city stories with locals

You’ll ride Auckland’s best cycleways on an electric bike tour with a local guide—summiting Mt Eden for panoramic views, crossing Harbour Bridge with city breezes in your hair, and exploring Viaduct Harbour’s lively waterfront. Small group size means real conversation and space to pause for photos or just take it in—there’s something grounding about seeing Auckland this way.

experience

What’s the experience like?

“You’ll get used to the hills,” our guide Tom grinned as we zipped up the side of Mt Eden — honestly, I’d never tried an electric bike before and was half-expecting to topple over. But it was easy, even fun, gliding past early joggers and that earthy smell after last night’s rain. The view from the top? Well, I’m not sure photos would do it justice — you can see all of Auckland just sort of spilling out in every direction. We stood there catching our breath (or maybe just pretending to), Tom pointing out where the old volcanoes once erupted. There was this quiet moment when a breeze picked up and you could hear tui birds somewhere down the slope.

We cruised down into neighborhoods I’d never have found alone — little bakeries with handwritten signs, kids in school uniforms waving as we passed. The headset commentary was actually handy (I usually tune those out), but hearing about Viaduct Harbour’s sailing history while watching boats bob in the marina felt different when you’re right there, legs humming from the ride. At Silo Park, someone was setting up for a food market and you could smell coffee drifting over from somewhere — made me wish we’d stopped for a flat white. Tom kept things light; he joked about my helmet hair at one point (fair).

The highlight for me was riding over Auckland Harbour Bridge. The wind is louder up there than you’d think, and looking down at all those sails below — now I get why they call it the City of Sails. We finished on that wild Pink Path, which is exactly what it sounds like: bright magenta under your wheels, city traffic whirring by but somehow you feel tucked away above it all. My hands were a bit shaky getting off the bike but in a good way — like I’d actually done something new. Still think about that view from Mt Eden sometimes.
