The experience

The day starts at the Mauritshuis in The Hague, where your guide introduces the museum and its Vermeer paintings before walking you through the parliament complex at the Binnenhof. You pass the Hofvijver pond, the prime minister's office, and the statue of Willem van Oranje on Het Plein: the square where the father of the Dutch nation stands. The guide walks Noordeinde Palace and the elegant streets that make up the political center, stopping at the Grote Kerk to point out the stork perched on its roof, then moves through the city's statues and embassies. By the time you leave The Hague, you've seen the layers of Dutch governance and royal history without rushing through them.

In Delft, you enter through the Oostpoort, the only surviving gate, and walk five minutes to the Beestenmarkt square for lunch in one of the historic buildings there. After eating, the guide takes you to the Markt, where the second-highest church in the Netherlands stands. The royal family is buried here, and the guide explains why Delft holds that honor. You walk past the spot where Vermeer lived and painted, see the old town hall (which served as a prison for centuries), and move through the former beer-brewing quarter to the Oude Kerk, the city's most recognizable building. The guide shows you the inner court of the Prinsenhof, where Willem van Oranje was shot, and walks you along the oldest canal toward the exact spot where Vermeer stood to paint his famous "View of Delft." You end at the Old Harbor, a lively waterfront with terraces and views, where the tour concludes and you can linger or move on to the south bank of the Maas.
