The experience

You meet your guide at Station Delft, steps from the city center, and head south toward the spot where Vermeer stood to paint his masterpiece. Along the way you pass the former weapons Armory and an office of the Dutch East India Company. The buildings that made Delft wealthy during the Golden Age. The route follows the city's second-oldest canal past the old synagogue and the Maria van Jessekerk before opening onto the market square, where the New Church rises as the second-tallest in the Netherlands.

Inside the New Church, your guide explains who lies buried beneath it, the Dutch royal family, and you can climb the tower's 365 steps if you want the view. From there you walk to the Vermeer Centre to see copies of all his paintings, then break for lunch in the weighing house behind the old town hall, with a drink included. The afternoon takes you through the Old Church, where Vermeer himself is buried, and past the Gemeenlandshuis and Museum Prinsenhof: the place where William of Orange, the Father of the Fatherland, was assassinated. The tour ends with a drive to Royal Delft, the only pottery factory still using 17th-century techniques, where you learn how Delft Blue is made and see the workshop.
