The Experience

You start with a bump on your head and blue porcelain fragments scattered around you—your tulip vase for the Royal family is gone, and you know who took it: the Pottery Pigeons. The Questo app guides you through Delft's canals and streets, dropping you at each of the 11 stops with a riddle to solve before you move on. The app tells you the story of each place as you stand there: the Eastern Gate, built around 1400 with its octagonal towers added in 1510, is the only city gate left in Delft. The Koornmarkt opens onto one of the city's famous canal streets. You pass the Gothic Saint Hippolytus Chapel and the Renaissance City Hall facing the Market Square, which measures 120 by 50 meters and is one of Europe's largest historic squares.

The walk takes you past the Vermeer Centrum, housed in the former guild hall where Vermeer himself joined the painters' guild in 1653. The Old Church, founded in 1246, grew into an impressive Gothic basilica over the centuries. At Museum Prinsenhof, you see the bullet holes still visible in the wall where William of Orange was murdered in 1584—a moment that changed Dutch history. The final stop is Windmill de Roos, built in 1679 and the only surviving mill of fifteen that once stood in the region. You explore at your own pace, so you can linger at any stop or move quickly through; there's no fixed schedule or group to keep up with.

One smartphone device works for up to three players, so a small group can share the game and solve the riddles together.
