The Experience

We met outside De Bijenkorf, right in the middle of Amsterdam — I was still brushing croissant flakes off my jacket when the Brew Bus rolled up. Our guide, Jeroen, waved us over with this easy grin like we’d all known each other for ages. The bus itself smelled faintly of hops and leather seats (maybe wishful thinking), and honestly, it felt good to sit down after dodging bikes all morning. I didn’t expect to feel so instantly at ease with strangers — maybe that’s just what happens when everyone’s here for the same reason: beer.

The first stop was tucked along a canal I’d never noticed before. Inside, the brewer handed me a cloudy glass and told me to swirl it — “for aroma,” he said, but I mostly caught orange peel and something earthy. We stood around these battered wooden barrels while Jeroen explained how Dutch craft beer had exploded in the last decade. He pointed out some graffiti on the wall that apparently belonged to one of Amsterdam’s oldest punk bands (I pretended to know who they were). The light slanted through high windows and made the foam look almost gold. Someone spilled their taster and nobody cared; it just made us laugh harder.

By the second brewery, I’d lost track of time — or maybe it was just the nine little tasters working their magic. Each place had its own vibe: one felt like someone’s living room, another more industrial with metal tanks humming quietly in the background. Our group started swapping stories about home cities and favorite beers; even Jeroen joined in, telling us about his first brewing disaster (“exploding bottles everywhere”). At one point, a local regular tried teaching me how to pronounce “bitterbal” properly — I failed miserably but got a free snack out of it.

The tour ended where we started, back at De Bijenkorf. It was late afternoon but somehow brighter than before — maybe just that warm buzz you get from good company and better beer. I keep thinking about that moment when we all clinked glasses at the last stop, not quite ready for it to be over yet.
