12-Day Everest Base Camp Trek with Helicopter Return
Walk to the world's highest base camp, then fly out over the glaciers.
The 12-day Everest Base Camp Trek with Helicopter Return from Kathmandu combines trekking to the base camp and Kala Patthar with a scenic helicopter flight back to Lukla, cutting the descent time while keeping the full mountain experience. You trek through Sherpa villages, cross suspension bridges, visit monasteries, and sleep in guesthouses along the route; a licensed English-speaking guide and porters handle the logistics, and all permits, domestic flights, lodging and trekking gear are included. The helicopter saves roughly two days of walking on the way down, so the 12-day version reaches base camp and returns by air, while the standard 14-day trek descends on foot.
The Experience
You arrive in Kathmandu and spend your first night in a 3-star hotel with breakfast. The next morning you fly or drive to Lukla and trek to Phakding, then climb to Namche Bazaar over the following two days with a rest day built in for acclimatization. The trail continues through Tengboche, where you visit the monastery, then Dingboche and Lobuche before the final push to Everest Base Camp on day nine. You sleep at Gorak Shep that night, then hike to Kala Patthar the next morning to watch the sunrise over Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse and Ama Dablam. Instead of retracing your steps downhill, you board the helicopter at Gorak Shep and fly back to Lukla in under an hour, seeing glaciers and valleys from above.
The guide is a licensed English speaker who walks with you the whole way; porters carry the heavy duffel bags so you trek with just a daypack. Guesthouses along the route provide basic rooms and meals—the food is simple but warm, and the lodges are where trekkers gather in the evenings. You get a duffel bag, sleeping bag and map as part of the package, and all the permits (Sagarmatha National Park, TIMS and Pasang Lhamu Entry) are arranged before you start. The domestic flights between Kathmandu and Lukla are included, as is the helicopter ride from Gorak Shep. On your final night back in Kathmandu you have a farewell dinner with Nepali cuisine and a cultural show before your departure on day twelve.
The trek demands moderate fitness—you'll be walking five to seven hours most days at altitude, with two acclimatization days built in to help your body adjust. The helicopter return means you skip the long descent but still reach the base camp itself, not just a viewpoint. Bring your own international flights and travel insurance; meals in Kathmandu and all meals during the trek are not included in the base price, though they can be added at checkout.

What's the difference between the 12-day trek with helicopter and the 14-day trek on foot?
The 12-day version reaches Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar, then flies back to Lukla by helicopter on day ten, saving the two-day descent. The 14-day trek descends on foot through Pheriche, Namche Bazaar and Lukla before flying back to Kathmandu, so it follows the traditional route all the way down.
Do I need to be an experienced trekker to do this trek?
No, but you need moderate fitness. You'll walk five to seven hours most days at high altitude, and the trek includes two acclimatization days to help your body adjust. The operator does not recommend this trek for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or pregnant travelers.
What happens on the acclimatization days?
Acclimatization days are built into the itinerary at Namche Bazaar on day four and at Dingboche on day seven. You stay in the same lodge and take short walks in the area to let your body adjust to the altitude before moving higher.
Is the guide included, and what language do they speak?
Yes, a licensed English-speaking guide walks with you the entire trek, along with porters who carry the heavy gear. The guide handles navigation, safety and cultural context at each stop.
What meals and lodging are included?
You stay in standard guesthouses along the trek route and in a 3-star hotel in Kathmandu. Breakfast is included at the Kathmandu hotel, but lunch and dinner in Kathmandu and all meals during the trek can be added at checkout; they are not in the base price.
What gear do I need to bring, and what's provided?
The trek includes a duffel bag, sleeping bag, T-shirt and map. You bring your own trekking boots, warm layers, rain jacket and personal items; the sleeping bag and duffel bag stay with you for the trek, and the guide will advise on what else to pack for the altitude and season.
