The Experience

The morning started off with a bit of chaos — I’d set my alarm for 5:30 but somehow managed to spill half my tea down my jacket while waiting for the hotel pickup in Kathmandu. Our driver just grinned and handed me a napkin, so I figured that was a good omen. The streets were already buzzing, which surprised me at that hour. At the airport, our guide Nima checked us in and cracked jokes about “mountain weather moods.” He wasn’t kidding — clouds drifted in and out so fast it felt like someone was playing with the light switch.

Once we were up in the helicopter, everything went quiet except for the thrum of the rotors. The keyword here is “Everest Base Camp helicopter tour” — but honestly, nothing about this felt like a tour. It’s more like you’re floating above stories you’ve only seen in books. We flew over ridges that looked sharp enough to cut sky, then suddenly there was Everest itself — not as showy as I expected, just quietly massive. The flight back to Lukla was quieter; everyone seemed lost in their own thoughts or staring out at those impossible peaks. My ears popped every few minutes and there was this faint metallic tang in the air from the oxygen tanks (they check your pulse and all that). Back in Kathmandu traffic again before noon — it felt surreal how quickly you go from Himalayan silence to car horns and dust. Even now, weeks later, sometimes I close my eyes and see that pale blue light bouncing off glaciers outside the window.
