Walk to the foot of the 10th highest mountain on Earth

A 5-day trek from Pokhara to Annapurna Base Camp at 4,130 meters, with an English-speaking guide and porter, meals at mountain lodges, and transport by private vehicle to the trailhead. The route climbs through lush terrain and high settlements to reach a base camp ringed by snow-capped peaks including Mt. Annapurna, Gangapurna and Machhapuchhre. Moderate fitness is required; the trek is not recommended for pregnant travelers.

The Experience

The trek starts with an early morning jeep drive from Pokhara to Morgue, below Ghandruk, then a 5-6 hour walk to Sinuwa at 2,340 meters. The trail climbs through terraced farmland and forest, passing through settlements where you'll stay in mountain lodges and eat with other trekkers. Your guide and porter handle the logistics — they know the route, carry the heavy gear, and arrange meals at each stop.

Day two takes you from Sinuwa to Deurali at 3,230 meters over 5-6 hours, climbing higher into thinner air and steeper terrain. On day three, you trek 4-5 hours to Annapurna Base Camp itself, passing through Machhapuchhre Base Camp at 3,700 meters on the way. The base camp sits at 4,130 meters, surrounded by the panorama of Mt. Annapurna (8,019m), Gangapurna (7,454m), Machhapuchhre (6,999m) and the peaks that ring the Annapurna region. The descent takes two days: 8-9 hours back down to Sinuwa on day four, then a 4-5 hour hike to Morgue and a 3-hour drive back to Pokhara on day five.

The trek includes all permits, government taxes, an English-speaking guide and porter, accommodation at guest houses and lodges, and three meals a day. You'll need moderate fitness to handle the altitude gain and the daily walking hours, especially on the steeper sections. The Annapurna Conservation Area entrance permit and TIMS card are arranged before you start; personal expenses like phone calls, laundry and drinks are separate.

Top questions

How high does the trek climb and what altitude should I expect at the base camp?

Annapurna Base Camp sits at 4,130 meters above sea level. The trek climbs from 2,340 meters at Sinuwa to 3,230 meters at Deurali, then to the base camp itself, so you gain significant altitude over the five days and should allow time for your body to adjust.

What mountains will I see from Annapurna Base Camp?

From the base camp, you stand beneath Mt. Annapurna (8,019m, the 10th highest mountain in the world), Gangapurna (7,454m), and Machhapuchhre (6,999m), along with other snow-capped peaks that ring the Annapurna region. The base camp provides a panoramic view of these mountains and the valleys below.

What's included in the trek and what do I need to pay for separately?

The trek includes all permits and fees, an English-speaking guide and porter, accommodation at mountain lodges, breakfast, lunch and dinner, and private vehicle transport from Pokhara to the trailhead and back. You pay separately for personal expenses like laundry, phone calls and hot showers, and for any drinks beyond what's provided with meals; tips for the guide and porter are optional.

How many hours of walking should I expect each day?

Day one is 5-6 hours, day two is 5-6 hours, day three is 4-5 hours to reach the base camp, day four is 8-9 hours on the descent, and day five is 4-5 hours of hiking plus a 3-hour drive back to Pokhara. The longest day is the descent from the base camp.

Do I need to be very fit to do this trek?

The trek requires at least a moderate level of physical fitness. The altitude gain and daily walking hours, especially on steeper sections, demand stamina and acclimatization. The trek is not recommended for pregnant travelers.

Will I sleep in tents or in buildings?

You stay in guest houses and lodges along the route, not in tents. These mountain lodges provide basic accommodation and are where meals are served each day.
