Cook a three-course Namibian meal in a township home, then sit down and eat it.

A 4-hour hands-on cooking class in the township of Mondesa, Swakopmund, where you prepare a starter, main dish and dessert with a local chef in her home kitchen, then dine on what you've cooked with wine or beer. The home is a 5-minute drive from central Swakopmund. Pickup from your hotel is included. The guide speaks English or German.

The experience

The class starts in a private home in Mondesa, the township district just outside Swakopmund's centre. You'll learn to make dishes from Owambo and Damara traditions: mopane worms (large edible caterpillars), mahangu porridge, rice, spinach, traditional bread, and beef or fish, depending on what's in season. Your host is a local chef who cooks these meals at home. You're not watching a demonstration, you're making them yourself, with guidance as you work through each step.

Over the 4 hours, you'll prepare a starter, a main course (homemade pap is the centrepiece), and a dessert. As you cook, you'll have a glass of wine or beer in hand, and you'll learn why these ingredients matter to Namibian cooking and to the families who live in Mondesa. The backstreets and alleys of the township are part of the experience too. You'll walk through them to reach the home, seeing how the neighbourhood actually works instead of staying on the main roads.

When the cooking is done, you sit down with your host and eat the meal you've made. Dinner is included. The experience ends with you tasting your own work, not rushing off to a restaurant. An air-conditioned vehicle picks you up from your hotel and brings you back.
