The experience
The tour starts with a drive through Swakopmund's centre into the township, where your guide explains the different tribes and Namibian culture as you move through the area. You'll walk through the open market to see how locals shop and trade, then stop at a Herero lady's home where she talks through Herero culture and religion in detail. This is not a museum visit. You're in someone's space, hearing directly from her.
Next comes a visit to a pre-primary school and kindergarten where you interact with the kids, followed by a stop at the Democratic Resettlement Community (DRC), an informal settlement. You'll also visit a traditional herbalist who explains their practice, and spend time with the Damaranama tribe. The tour wraps with a tasting of local foods. This is optional, so you can skip it if you prefer. Throughout the three hours, you have bottled water and soda, and the air-conditioned vehicle means you're not walking the whole time in the heat.
