Myanmar cooking class: Market shopping and four dishes
Shop the market like a local, then cook Myanmar dishes from scratch with your guide.
A hands-on cooking class in Myanmar where you shop for ingredients at Ngwe Saung Market, taste local tea culture, and cook six traditional dishes with a local chef. The class runs four hours and includes one soft drink. An English-speaking guide leads the group through both the market and the kitchen. Children from age 5 are welcome.
The experience
The morning starts at Ngwe Saung Market, where you pick up a shopping list and move through the stalls with the chef and other participants to buy vegetables, meat and spices. This is not a guided tour of the market. You are doing the shopping yourself, choosing what goes into your dishes and talking to vendors and locals. After the market run, the group stops at a local tea shop to taste Myanmar tea and learn how tea culture works here, then heads back to the kitchen.
You cook six dishes with the chef's instruction: vegetable tempura with Myanmar-style sauce, tea leaf salad (made with tea leaves, fried peas, fried garlic, dry shrimp, tomato, onion and peanut oil), chicken with potato curry, fish with salty fruit in country style, fried cauliflower, and sticky rice balls with coconut. The chef demonstrates each one, then you make it yourself. At the end you eat what you cooked, and one soft drink is included with the class.
The class runs four hours total and is led by an English-speaking guide. Public transportation options are available nearby if you need to reach the location. Alcoholic drinks can be added at checkout if you want them with your meal.
