The experience
How do you fit Tangier's layered history (Portuguese, English, French occupation and its time as an international zone) into a single day without a car? This tour starts in Perdicaris Park, where the forest meets the Strait of Gibraltar, then moves through the Kasbah, the 15th-century fortress that anchors the city's old town. You walk the Medina's narrow streets past the Mendoubia Gardens and Saint Andrews Church, moving through the same routes merchants and residents have used for centuries.
The route then heads north to Cape Spartel, where the Mediterranean and Atlantic meet. The lighthouse here dates back 150 years and sits on territory marked by extraordinary natural and cultural heritage. From there you reach the Hercules Caves, an archaeological complex believed to date to 2500 BC. The cave has two openings (one to the sea, one to land), and the sea opening frames a natural shape locals call "The Map of Africa," said to have been carved by Phoenicians. You also ride camels near the Atlantic before returning to the city.
Transport is air-conditioned throughout, and your guide handles the route and the history. The tour runs six hours total. Pickup is included, and the guide speaks your choice of English, French or Arabic.
