The experience
You're picked up from your hotel and driven through Tangier in an air-conditioned car with Mohamed Ali, who speaks English and Spanish and knows the city's layered history. The tour moves between the sites that frame Tangier's identity: the Kasbah, where Sultan Moulay Ismail built his palace and gardens called Dar el Makhzen on a hill overlooking the medina; Cap Spartel, a promontory 300 meters above sea level at the entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar, 12 kilometers west of the city; and the Hercules Caves, which sit below the cape and have two entrances. One from the sea, one from land. The sea entrance is known as the Map of Africa because of its shape when viewed from the water, believed to have been carved by the Phoenicians.
You'll ride a camel on Achakkar Beach, a moment most visitors don't expect to find on a city tour. The Medina is where the afternoon opens up: you walk through the small streets and colorful markets with your guide, who steers you toward the best quality products and helps you negotiate prices if you want to buy. There's time to sit at one of the panoramic terraces overlooking the old city and eat Moroccan food, and you can visit the traditional craft shops to watch how things are made. The tour also passes the Mohammed V Mosque, completed in 1983; the Marshan Palace, which served as the seat of the Legislative Assembly during the Tangier International Zone; and the Tangier American Legation Museum, the first American public property outside the United States.
Coffee, tea, or fresh orange juice is included, along with mineral water and WiFi on board. The car is wheelchair accessible, and all areas you visit are accessible as well. The tour runs 4 to 5 hours total, and your guide will make sure you see the city at a pace that lets you absorb it rather than rush through.
