The experience

The tour moves through Rabat in a private green taxi, the city's signature transport, with a professional driver who knows the route and the stops. You start at the Kasbah of the Udayas, a 12th-century fortress at the mouth of the Bou Regreg river, and walk through its Andalusian Gardens: a landscaped oasis with fountains, jasmine and orange blossoms created during the French colonial period. From there the taxi takes you past the modern Marina of Rabat for photos of the waterfront and cityscape, then to Hassan Tower, the 44-meter minaret commissioned in the 12th century by Sultan Yacoub al-Mansour, where you see the ruins of an unfinished mosque and columns across a wide esplanade.

The Mausoleum of Mohammed V comes next: a white marble monument in traditional Moroccan style, with intricate mosaics, carved wood and gold leaf inside, holding King Mohammed V and his two sons. You pass the gates and grounds of the Royal Palace, the official residence visible from outside, then move into the Old Medina: a maze of narrow streets filled with traditional souks selling jewelry, textiles, spices and fresh produce, where local artisans work in open stalls. The tour also includes Chellah, an ancient archaeological site just outside the city walls with Roman streets, Islamic minarets and gardens dating back to the Phoenician and Roman eras. Entry is 7 euros per person.

A live guide in English or French is available as an option at checkout. The three-hour duration includes all travel time between stops, and the taxi picks you up from your hotel or meeting point. Infants sit on an adult's lap. The pace suits all fitness levels.
