The experience

You leave Casablanca at 9am and drive the motorway to Rabat, about an hour and a half along the Atlantic coast. Your guide meets you there and walks you through the royal palace, then takes you to Chellah, a medieval fortress and necropolis layered with Phoenician, Roman and Marinid history. The site sits inside a UNESCO World Heritage boundary, and the guide explains what the walls, mausoleums and archaeological remains tell about the dynasties that used it.

From there you climb to the Kasbah of the Udayas, a blue-and-white walled fortress on a hill overlooking the Bou Regreg river mouth. The Great Gate was built in the 1190s and frames views across the old medina and out to sea.
