The Experience

The first thing I noticed as we left Casablanca was how the city noise faded out behind us. Our driver, Youssef, joked about the traffic (“Casablanca never sleeps—except maybe at 3am”). It took about an hour to reach Rabat, but honestly, it went fast with WiFi in the car and Youssef pointing out things I’d never have spotted—like the roadside stalls selling oranges. The air changed too; something softer, maybe a bit salty from the ocean? I’m not sure. We rolled up to the Hassan Tower just as a group of school kids were pouring out of a bus—lots of laughter echoing around those old stones. The tower itself is huge, and you can see all these tiny details carved in—calligraphy twisting over the sandstone if you get close enough.

I didn’t expect to be so moved by the Mausoleum of Mohammed V. There’s this hush inside, almost like everyone’s holding their breath under that big dome. The marble floors are cool underfoot and even though I tried not to stare at the guards in their bright uniforms, it was hard not to—they stand so perfectly still. Youssef told us about the architect being Vietnamese and how Moroccan artisans built everything by hand. He seemed proud of that part; I would be too.

We couldn’t go inside the Royal Palace (no surprise), but even just standing outside those gates felt special. There were peacocks strutting around in the gardens—one actually screamed right when I tried to take a photo and made me jump (Youssef laughed). After that we wandered through Chellah’s ruins where storks nest on top of crumbling walls—it smells like wildflowers mixed with old stone there. Then came my favorite bit: getting lost in the Kasbah of the Udayas’ blue-and-white lanes. A woman sweeping her doorstep smiled at us and waved me over to smell her jasmine bush—I still think about that scent sometimes.

Lunch wasn’t included but we stopped at Marina Salé by the river for grilled fish and mint tea. Not fancy, but good—and sitting there watching boats drift past felt like a pause before heading back into city life again.
