The experience

You start in Casablanca's old medina, where narrow streets and traditional markets show the city's historical layers without a guide narrating over your shoulder. From there the day moves through the Hassan II Mosque (one of the world's largest, with a 210-meter minaret overlooking the Atlantic), then past Rick's Cafe, the restaurant built to recreate the bar from the 1942 film, and along the Corniche with its coastal views. The driver knows the route and the timing. You walk what interests you and skip what doesn't.

By midday you're in Rabat, where Chellah mixes Roman ruins, a medieval necropolis and gardens in one site, and the Hassan Tower stands as a 12th-century reminder of Almohad architecture. The Mausoleum of Mohammed V, built between 1961 and 1971, sits nearby. Lunch happens at La Marina Bouregreg, at the confluence of the river and ocean, before you move to the Kasbah des Oudaias: white houses with blue doors on a hill above the water. The Royal Palace is visible but not entered. The focus stays on what's open to visitors.

The vehicle is air-conditioned and the driver speaks English or French. Bottled water comes with you. Eight to ten hours is long enough to see both cities without rushing through either one, and short enough to fit into a single day if you've landed in Casablanca or have a free afternoon before moving on.
