I didn’t expect the drive to feel so quick (it’s about an hour and a half), but maybe that’s because he kept pointing out little things along the way: roadside fruit sellers, the first glimpse of the Bou Regreg river. It smelled faintly of oranges when we rolled down the window near Salé.

Our local guide met us in Rabat proper — Fatima, who grew up nearby and seemed to know every shortcut through the old town. She led us straight to Chellah first, where storks nest on ancient stone walls. The place is quiet in a way that makes you lower your voice without thinking. I remember brushing my hand along one of those sun-warmed stones and feeling how rough it was, older than anything back home. Then we walked over to Hassan Tower; it’s massive but unfinished, which Fatima explained was because the sultan died before it could be completed.
