The experience

Hassan Tower and the Royal Mausoleum anchor the tour's first stop. The octagonal tower has an observation deck, and the mausoleum, built in the early 18th century, holds the tomb of Mohammed V. Both are free to enter, and royal guards are stationed there. From here the route moves to Kasbah of the Udayas, a medieval Almohadan fortress with Andalusian gardens at its base and ocean views from the acropolis. The gardens sit behind a smaller entrance away from the main gate, which cuts down encounters with informal guides. An outdoor café overlooks the water if you want to pause.

Chellah, the third major stop, layers Carthaginian, Roman and Arab history into one site. Storks nest atop the old minaret, especially in spring when bird life peaks. The ruins themselves are free to walk through, though admission is charged separately. The Royal Palace of Rabat, though not open to visitors, rounds out the route. You'll pass it on a walk that guards sometimes permit between entrances. The whole tour runs three hours, with your guide tailoring the pace and commentary to what interests you.
