The experience
The tour starts with hotel pickup in Casablanca and heads to Rabat's Mausoleum of Mohammed V, a grand Islamic structure built between 1961 and 1971 with white onyx tombs beneath a large dome and intricate marble work designed by Vietnamese architect Nguyen Viet Thu. From there, you pass the Royal Palace (the official residence of Morocco's king, built in the 1980s with traditional Moroccan architecture and ornate ironwork) before reaching Hassan Tower, a 44-meter minaret from the 12th century that stands beside the ruins of an unfinished mosque, decorated with calligraphy and geometric patterns.
Chellah, a fortified necropolis with Roman and Islamic origins, anchors the middle of the day: you walk through serene gardens past Roman temples and tombs that span centuries. The Kasbah of the Udayas, a 12th-century citadel, follows next: a maze of narrow streets with white and blue walls, small houses and flower-filled courtyards, plus a mosque and museum. You also walk the 12th-century sandstone fortifications that ring the old city, which give views over the Medina and surrounding area.
Your guide speaks English, French or Arabic and travels with you throughout. The vehicle is air-conditioned with WiFi on board, and bottled water is provided. Morning and afternoon departures are available. Pick the time that suits the rest of your Casablanca schedule.
