The experience
The day starts with pickup from your Chefchaouen hotel or riad, then a 4x4 drive through villages and green pastures into Talassemtane National Park. The park protects Morocco's last threatened fir forests: the Moroccan fir (Abies Marocaca) grows nowhere else, along with endangered Atlas cedar and over 100 bird species including the bearded vulture. You'll stop at Plaza de Espana, a high ridge where you can rest and take in the landscape before the trek begins.
From Plaza de Espana, the hike climbs to Mount Lakraa's 2159-meter summit. The panoramic view from the top opens onto the Mediterranean coast below and the surrounding mountain terrain. The descent takes you down to Mechkralla village, where a rural house serves a traditional Moroccan lunch. After eating, you'll drink Moroccan tea with medicinal herbs before the 4x4 returns you to Chefchaouen.
