The experience
The trek starts at Ras el-Maa Waterfall, the kilometer-zero point, and climbs into the upper Tissouka valley through cedars, junipers and endemic fir trees. The first day runs 7 hours with a picnic stop after 3 hours to rest. You descend to Afeska village in the afternoon, where the rural gite is waiting with local tea made from medicinal plants. Overnight accommodation and half-board (dinner and breakfast) are included.
Day two begins at Afeska and follows a path at the foot of Jbel Abdoun through a splendid forest of cedars and pines. The geological formations are dramatic, and if luck is on your side you may spot monkeys in the canopy. The route leads to God's Bridge, a natural red rock arch that glows during sunset: the reason many trekkers time their arrival for late afternoon. After the bridge, you walk down to Akchour village, where you can rest by the river before the taxi picks you up for the return to Chefchaouen.
A local mountain guide leads both days and handles the pacing. The guide speaks English, Spanish, French or Arabic. Hotel pickup from anywhere in Chefchaouen, including inside the Medina, is arranged at the start. The return taxi from Akchour is included.
