The experience
The hike starts at 9 a.m. on day one with a 5-hour trek along the rocky path of Tissouka Mountain, passing through traditional Rif villages where you see how people live in these high settlements. The route opens onto broad views of Chefchaouen city below and the agricultural landscapes of the Oued Laou valley. You arrive at Zaouiya village and the Gite Talassemtane, a guesthouse 12 kilometers from Chefchaouen, where you have lunch, free time to rest, and overnight in a double or triple room with hot water and shower.
Day two moves into the heart of Talassemtane National Park on a moderately challenging hike to Mount Lakraa, the region's highest summit at 2,159 meters. The trail winds through forested hills, peaks and limestone cliffs shaped by unique geological forces. The Rif's cedar forest (the only one in Africa and part of the Intercontinental Mediterranean Biosphere Reserve) surrounds you for thousands of meters. The park shelters over 35 mammal species including Barbary Macaque monkeys and more than 100 bird species such as the Golden Eagle. After six hours of hiking and a picnic lunch, you return to the guesthouse and then transfer back to Chefchaouen.
The guide accompanies you throughout both days and handles the route logistics. Breakfast and dinner are provided at the guesthouse. You bring or purchase lunch supplies for the trail. The terrain is rocky and steep in places, so moderate fitness and proper hiking boots matter. Pickup from Chefchaouen is included. The guesthouse sits off the main roads in a rural setting where you experience Berber hospitality directly.
