You’ll see Morocco wake up from above—Atlas Mountains glowing at sunrise, peaceful villages below—and finish with a real local breakfast before heading back to Marrakech.
The alarm went off before dawn, and honestly, I almost hit snooze. But stepping outside the riad into the cool, still-dark streets of Marrakech woke me right up. The city’s just starting to stir—somebody’s already baking bread nearby, you can smell it in the air. Our driver found us right on time near Jemaa el-Fna and we piled into a comfy 4x4. The ride out of town is quiet; you see the city lights fade behind you and then it’s just open fields and that faint outline of the Atlas Mountains ahead.
At the launch site, there’s this gentle buzz of excitement—people chatting quietly over sweet mint tea or strong coffee. Our pilot, Hassan (he’s been flying for years), gathered us around for a quick safety talk. He explained how to stand during landing—knees bent, hold tight—and answered every nervous question with a smile. You can hear the burners firing up as the crew gets the balloon ready; it’s louder than I expected but kind of thrilling.
Climbing into the basket is easier than it looks. Suddenly, we’re floating up—slow at first, then higher until rooftops turn tiny and fields stretch out like patchwork. If you’re lucky with weather (we were), sunrise spills over the mountains in soft pinks and golds. You can spot little villages waking up below, smoke curling from chimneys, even a shepherd leading his goats along a dusty path. It’s quiet up there except for an occasional whoosh from the burner and someone whispering “wow” under their breath.
Landing is smoother than I thought—just a couple gentle bumps and we’re back on solid ground. Breakfast comes next: warm msemen pancakes, olives, honey, and eggs served in a cozy Berber tent (or sometimes a local house if it’s chilly). There’s plenty of sweet mint tea to go around. Sitting there with everyone swapping stories while chickens cluck outside feels pretty special.
The drive back to Marrakech is relaxed—most people are scrolling through photos or just gazing out at the countryside rolling by. We got dropped off right where we started, close to Jemaa el-Fna square or our riad door if possible. Honestly? It’s one of those mornings that sticks with you long after you’ve left Morocco.
