The Experience
We were bouncing along the edge of Marrakech before I’d even finished my coffee—our driver weaving through early traffic, windows cracked just enough to let in that dry morning air. The city faded fast, replaced by rows of stubborn palms and dust swirling up behind us. At the Palmeraie, our guide Youssef grinned as he handed out helmets and goggles (mine kept slipping). He explained the basics—throttle here, brakes there—then we took off on our quad bikes, engines humming over packed sand and little trails that twisted around clusters of cacti. I caught a whiff of something sweet—maybe wild herbs?—and tried not to eat too much dust from my friend’s back tire.
We stopped now and then for photos, which honestly felt like an excuse to catch our breath. Youssef pointed out distant Berber houses tucked between palms. He told us how his family has lived nearby for generations—his uncle still keeps goats somewhere out there. I tried asking about the palm dates in French; he answered in a mix of Arabic and English, laughing when I mixed up words (I definitely called a camel a “chameau” at one point). The sun was getting higher but it wasn’t hot yet, just that kind of light that makes everything look sharper.
After parking the quads, we wandered into this low Berber tent where mint tea waited on a battered silver tray. The tea was sweet and sharp at once—I burned my tongue but didn’t care. There were little plates of bread too, warm from somewhere unseen. Sitting cross-legged, listening to someone strum quietly on what looked like an old lute, I felt oddly calm. Then came the camels: taller than I expected and surprisingly gentle-eyed. Mounting up was awkward (my left foot got stuck) but once we started moving through the palms again it was all quiet creaking saddles and soft hoof sounds in the sand. I still think about that slow rhythm sometimes when city noise gets too much.
