The Experience

I’ll admit it — I was nervous about the quad bikes. The engine sounded way louder than I expected when we got to the Agafay Desert base camp, just outside Marrakech. Our guide Youssef grinned and handed me a helmet, saying something about “Moroccan massage” (the bumpy kind). The air smelled dry and dusty, but not unpleasant — like warm stone after a long day in the sun. We set off in a little convoy, engines buzzing, sand flicking up behind us. I kept thinking I’d tip over but somehow didn’t. Youssef kept checking on us with these big hand gestures, making sure nobody got lost.

After the quad ride (which honestly left my arms tingling), we swapped helmets for those blue nomadic scarves and met our camels. Mine was named Samba — he had this slow blink that made him look wise or maybe just bored. Riding at sunset felt surreal; the light turned everything gold and quiet except for the occasional snort from Samba. Marrakech felt far away out here. Li tried to say “thank you” in Arabic to our camel handler and got it wrong — everyone laughed, including the handler, who corrected her gently.

By nightfall we were under these low Berber tents with carpets everywhere and a campfire going strong. The smell of tajine drifted around — cinnamon, lemon, something earthy I couldn’t place. There was music too: drums and clapping that started slow then sped up until people joined in (I tried but have no rhythm). Dinner was salad first, then tajine with soft lamb and vegetables, fruit for dessert. I still think about that meal sometimes when I smell cumin at home. We sat around talking with other travelers while stars came out overhead — you could actually see them all out here. It’s funny how quickly you forget city noise when you’re just listening to fire crackle.
