The Experience

“You want to see the real Marrakech?” That’s what our driver, Youssef, asked as we climbed into his car just outside our riad. I could still smell the mint tea from breakfast and honestly, after getting lost in the medina twice already, I was relieved to let someone else steer for a while. The air conditioning felt like a tiny miracle. Youssef switched between French and English so easily it made my head spin (he even threw in some Spanish for my partner). Our first stop was the Koutoubia Mosque—he pointed out how its minaret lines up with the old city gates, something I’d never have noticed on my own.

The Bahia Palace was next. I remember the cool tiles underfoot and this faint scent of orange blossom drifting through one of the courtyards. Youssef waited outside (“take your time, no rush,” he said), but when we came back he told us a story about the sultan’s wives that made me laugh out loud. We drove through the Jewish Quarter—the Mellah—and he slowed down so we could watch an old man selling spices from a wooden cart. There was this moment where everything got quiet except for the sound of birds and far-off calls to prayer. It felt like all of Marrakech was breathing around us.

I didn’t expect to like the Majorelle Gardens as much as I did—so blue it almost hurt your eyes, but peaceful too. We could pick where to stop or just roll on if we wanted. No haggling with taxis or worrying about getting stranded somewhere weirdly far from anything (which happened yesterday, but that’s another story). Four hours went by fast; I still think about that view from the car window as we crossed into Gueliz and saw how new and old Marrakech fit together. Not everything made sense right away—and maybe that’s why it sticks with me.
