The Experience
The first thing that hit me was the scent—spices and orange blossoms, all tangled up in the morning air near Bab Doukkala. Our guide, Youssef, waved us down a narrow alley I’d never have found on my own. There was this old wooden door, half open, leading to a courtyard garden where sunlight danced through palm fronds. He showed us how to frame shots so the mosaic tiles popped against the greenery. I snapped a photo of an old man sipping mint tea—he grinned when he noticed.
We ducked into the souk just as it started getting busy. The hum of bargaining mixed with the clang of metalworkers nearby. Youssef pointed out a stall selling saffron and dried rose petals—said it’s his mother’s favorite spot for spices. We practiced candid street shots here; I caught a kid chasing pigeons between stalls. Halfway through, we took a break at Café Kessabine for sweet mint tea and looked over our photos together on my camera screen—he gave tips on angles I’d never considered.
Later, we climbed up to a rooftop terrace overlooking Jemaa el-Fnaa square. The call to prayer echoed across the city just as the light turned golden—perfect for wide shots of the medina rooftops and Atlas Mountains in the haze. Youssef helped me get portraits with that soft sunset glow behind me. By the end, my memory card was full of moments I’d have missed wandering solo.
