The Experience

I didn’t expect the road from Casablanca to Marrakech to feel so long and short at the same time. Maybe it was the way our guide, Youssef, kept pointing out little things—olive groves, a crumbling wall that apparently belonged to someone famous (I missed who). The air changed as we got closer; warmer, dustier, with a hint of something sweet I still can’t name. By the time we pulled up for our Marrakech day trip, I’d already forgotten about my phone.

The first real “wow” hit me at Majorelle Garden. I’d seen photos but the blue is different in person—almost electric against the green and yellow. There was this older man sweeping leaves near a cactus, humming something I couldn’t place. Youssef told us how Yves Saint Laurent saved the place, and then let us wander. My shoes crunched on gravel; I tried to take a photo but just ended up sitting for a minute instead. Sometimes you just want to be quiet.

After that, Bahia Palace—tiles everywhere, sunlight bouncing off mosaics so bright you squint even indoors. We stopped at Koutoubia Mosque too (couldn’t go inside), and Youssef explained how its minaret is like a compass for locals. The call to prayer drifted over the city right then—honestly gave me goosebumps. Lunch was somewhere near the old Jewish quarter; I’ll admit I forgot the name but remember orange juice so fresh it made my teeth ache.

The souks were chaos in every direction—leather smells mixing with spices and smoke from food stalls. Jemaa el-Fna was louder than I imagined: snake charmers (one winked at me), kids running between carts, women offering henna tattoos with hands stained deep red. My friend tried bargaining for a scarf and failed spectacularly; everyone laughed—including the vendor. That felt good.

We finished at Gueliz for coffee before heading back to Casablanca. It’s funny how twelve hours can feel like three days when you’re walking through colors and voices you’ve never known before. Even now, sometimes when things get too quiet at home, I think about that square buzzing after sunset—and kind of wish I could go back.
