The experience
You leave your Casablanca hotel early in an air-conditioned vehicle with a local guide who speaks English, Spanish or French. The drive to Marrakech takes you through the Atlas foothills, and once you arrive, the day moves through the city's main sights without backtracking. Bahia Palace comes first: a 19th-century royal residence with courtyards, gardens and decorated rooms that show the scale of Moroccan palace architecture. The guide walks you through the layout and explains what each space was built for.
Jemaa el-Fna is the pivot point of the day. This main square fills with street performers, musicians and market stalls, and you spend time here absorbing the rhythm of the place before moving into the medina's narrow streets. The Koutoubia Mosque, with its 77-meter minaret, anchors the old city. You explore its gardens and learn how the 12th-century structure shaped Marrakech's layout. The Saadian Tombs, hidden for centuries until 1917, hold the mausolees of a royal dynasty, decorated with zellige tilework and carved stucco. Bab Agnaou, one of the medina's historic gates, marks the transition between the royal quarter and the working city.
The camel ride through the Palmeraie (a 45-minute stretch through palm groves on the city's edge) is the break from walking and crowds. Your guide shares stories about local life and history as you move through the oasis. Dar el Bacha Museum of Confluences, an early 20th-century palace turned museum, closes the day with exhibitions on Marrakech's cultural layers. You return to your Casablanca hotel by evening.
