The experience

The route from Casablanca to Marrakech runs inland through Morocco's interior, and the journey itself is part of the day. Your guide meets you at your hotel or the airport in Casablanca and drives you south in a private air-conditioned minivan. The Koutoubia Mosque appears first: a 12th-century landmark with a 77-meter minaret and geometric patterns carved into its stone. Non-Muslims can't enter the mosque itself, but the exterior and its surrounding gardens are the visual anchor of Marrakech's skyline.

Once in the Medina, you ride a camel through the narrow alleys and past the souks where vendors sell spices, textiles, ceramics and jewelry. The Medina is a UNESCO World Heritage site enclosed by ancient walls, and the layout (tight passages, stalls opening directly onto the street, the smell of cumin and leather) is built to move slowly through. After the guided portion, you have roughly 90 minutes of free time in Jamaa el-Fnaa, the main square. Street performers, food vendors and musicians work the square, especially as the afternoon moves toward evening. This is where you decide whether to eat, shop or simply sit and watch.

The Menara Gardens sit just outside the city, a 12th-century oasis with an artificial lake, olive groves and a central pavilion. The Atlas Mountains rise behind the gardens, and the light changes the view throughout the day. Your guide drives you back to Casablanca afterward, arriving in the evening. Bottled water is provided during the tour. Bring cash if you want to eat or buy anything in the Medina or the square.
